Types of roses

Roses are the most famous flowers in the world and perhaps the most beautiful. Despite the popularity of this beautiful flower, many don’t know that there’s a great variety of roses. From Verdissimo, the leading producer of preserved plants and flowers, we wanted to tell you in this article about different types of roses.

However, beforehand we’ll give you a brief overview of these flowers:

  • Roses belong to the Rosaceae family.
  • There are close to 100 different species.
  • Most roses come from Asia, while others, though smaller, come from Europe, North America and Africa.
  • They have multiple uses: decoration, fragrance and medicinal use.

3 types of roses

These are the main types of roses that exist:

Wild roses

Wild roses are those originating in nature, which the rest of roses are descended from.

Some of the most well-known wild rose species are: Field, California, Dog, Gallic, Moyes, Sweetbriar and Rosa pouzinii, among many others.

Old garden roses

These flowers are little known, as they originate from before the year 1867.

There are 13 species that come from old garden roses. We’ll mention some of the most representative roses of this type: China, Centifolia, Damask, Moss, Noisette and Sempervirens.

Modern garden roses

Modern garden roses are the most well-known today. Also, most roses belong to this type, nearly 95% of roses around the world.

Some well-known species are: Climbing, Miniature, Sarmentosa, Rambling, Polyantha, Grandiflora, Floribunda and Shrub.
